Slash’s opening for this classic rock piece is as great a finger coordination exercise as “Wipeout” was 50 years ago for beginning guitarists.

Many new guitar students have a hard time imagining that the blues has anything to do with hard rock, but improvise a guitar solo against “Sweet Child” or “Mississippi Queen” using the blues scale and you’ll quickly see and hear how they fit together.

Espionage

Love teaching “Espionage” by Green Day. It’s shaped in the classic surf/spy form. Great for learning and reading your lower bass ledger notes. Have fun, start a garage band and make this one of your first numbers in your set. Include “Wipeout,” “Pipeline” “the James Bond Theme” and pretty soon your on the beach performing for blondes in bikini’s, dude!

I Want You (She’s So Heavy)

This is a fun Beatles’ blues guitar piece that teaches us string stretching, a little about arpeggio (broken chord) playing,
and blues scale improvisation. It can be played straight, jazzy or gives us an opportunity to crank on the “gain”
switch and get dirty and gutsy.

Have fun on this in our guitar lessons and playing along with this u-tube lesson. (I know I do.)
